Staying Connected to Your Intuition in a Busy World

Everyone has an inner guidance system, AKA Intuition, that is always available. When you trust yourself and your intuition, it becomes easier to make decisions based on your authentic self, what you truly want, rather than what you think you should want.

Intuition Vs. Anxiety

A question I get asked a lot is “How do I know if it’s intuition or anxiety?”. First, it’s important to know that getting too attached to an outcome won’t allow you to accurately receive intuitive messages. Intuition is subtle, calm, and an inner knowing. Anxiety is persistent, urgent, causes a nervous system fight or flight response, and presents “what if’s”. Anxiety feels like fear. A mentor taught me that the best way to think of this is that anxiety is the question while intuition is the answer. It’s also important to keep in mind that intuitive messages may not always be what you expect—your intuition may use symbols, phrases, or other unexpected ways of communicating with you. it’s important to make a decision to believe in your own magic and trust that intuition is a skill that you can strengthen and develop.

How to Begin

To begin, practice tuning into your inner self, your inner light, or into your heart, whichever resonates most with you. I like to imagine switching off my thinking brain and shifting my attention to the space around my heart. Connect to your breath. Imagine that you can breathe from the bottoms of your feet all the way to the top of your head. Practice staying present with your breath and set your intentions. You can simply ask, “What do I need to know about this situation?” or you can get more specific about your intentions. For example, I like to write a specific question for my intuition/Higher Self in a notebook before I begin, then close the book and tune in. Keep in mind that your answer may appear later in the day or week. Next, get curious. Be open to feelings, images, words, phrases, or symbols that may show up. Try your best to keep your conscious mind out of it, remembering that intuition feels more like a subtle “dropping in” of information or inner knowing.

With intuition, It’s important to get to know what your own energy feels like, in other words, to differentiate between your energy and others’ energy. Try practicing what your energy feels like when you are by yourself. It’s also important to practice checking in with your body, as intuition lives in the body. What does your body feel like? What stands out? What does it need or want in this moment? How does your body feel around certain people or situations? Also remember that intuition is all about noticing. What catches your attention or stands out to you in a place or during an interaction? What are you naturally drawn to? How does your body react to certain things?

Try Oracle or Tarot Cards

Try picking up a deck of oracle or tarot cards that you feel drawn to. Shuffle the cards and spread them out face down in front of you. Close your eyes and let your hand be drawn to a particular card. When you turn the card over, what is the first thing you notice about it? What do you feel when you look at it? What stands out to you? If this card could tell you a story, what would it be? Try drawing 3 cards to represent past, present, and future as it relates to your question. Remember, there is no right or wrong answer, you are just practicing. Trust that what the cards are telling you is correct, even if your conscious mind doesn’t want to believe the answers.

Dreams

When you sleep, your conscious mind is offline, which allows intuitive messages to more easily drop in. Try setting an intention or asking a question before bed. Keep a journal next to your bed and jot down anything you remember upon waking, even if it doesn’t immediately make sense. Rather than getting mired in the details, What is the overall message?

Practice with Future Events

As a way to hone your intuition, practice with practical, low stakes future events such as where you might find a parking space, which checkout line will be the fastest, what might be in your mailbox, or when a friend might call or text you. It’s important to practice how you feel rather than what your conscious mind is telling you. Remember, the job of your conscious mind is to keep you safe through pointing out what is familiar and comfortable. Intuition can feel a little risky at first because you’re trusting a feeling or inner knowing rather than your thoughts but the more you do it, the more your conscious mind learns it’s okay. Try remembering or writing down the times your intuition was right!

intuition builds the more you trust it. The more you follow and act on your intuitive messages, the more precise your intuition becomes and the more fearless and free your life can be! Remember, it’s not necessarily about “getting it right” all the time, but rather creating an authentic life that is aligned with your truth.
